Builth Wells Primary School

Builth Wells Primary was the first project we were asked to undertake for Powys County Council Catering as school dinners were on the decline.

CKM had to design a kitchen and recommend suitable equipment to feed the pupils from such a small kitchen. After a number of visits and discussions with our staff and the Council together with the staff from the school, we arrived with this solution.

The existing power supply and services were restricted, therefore we opted for two MKN Junior Electric Ovens and an induction hob as the prime cooking and added Moffat Re-gen units with a dishwash set up in the corner. The school is thrilled with the new design and the cook wants an MKN Junior in her kitchen at home!

The number of pupils eating school meals has increased dramatically with the variety of healthy options now available on the menu. Peter Marrs, Facilities Manager for Powys County Council, said: “There were actually no provisions at the school for cooking; there was only a wash-up area. This was because the kitchen was designed at a time when the meals were cooked and transported from one central kitchen.

With rising fuel costs and also the impact on the environment from transporting 150 meals a day, we knew we had to find a better and more practical solution to meet the catering needs in Builth Wells.”

Servery Suite

It is important that all kitchen staff have the necessary equipment and space to serve all the children in a safe and professional manner.

We installed a Moffat 4 well bain marie hot cupboard and refrigerated well and walls were removed and re-built by our building team in order for us to install an electric roller shutter. This area now offers a larger variety of school meals to pupils in a more efficient manner and the school has subsequently seen an increase in the number of school dinners purchased.

Dolau Primary School Combi Setup

This image is a complete refurb of a kitchen that was 30 years old. Dolau Primary School now has the most state-of-the-art kitchen in RCT.

Now mainly an electric kitchen, the energy saved from the use of the MKN combination ovens and induction hobs is incredible. Our engineers amended the existing gas supply and increased the electric supply and we design the layout to suit the new ideas and potential.

Gram refrigeration and E.R Moffat fabrication and servery units are also essential in our new kitchens with comprehensive training to all stall from their experienced sales executives. Our Sales Director states: “Introducing MKN Combi ovens, supported by induction cooking units instead of gas in the kitchen, immediately eliminated having to pay for emissions tests.

The kitchen could be powered by sustainable energy, cutting out gas completely and making it far greener and eventually, cost effective. The Hans Dampf Air steam condensation hood means money is saved because energy isn’t required for any extraction and the MKN ovens are great because they have 50% more capacity than other ovens of similar size.”

Oakdale Comprehensive School

Our brief was to design a kitchen that provided individual stations as a “training kitchen” for students at Oakdale Comprehensive School.

The image shows our bespoke counter with a centre spine covered with bright red Altro hygienic cladding and also includes dishwash, hand wash and sink facilities. The kitchen was transformed by our engineers into a complete electric kitchen with individual training stations for students to learn.

Training from MKN and other manufacturers is comprehensive and is always completed on site in order for the staff and managers to obtain the best from this new and more efficient equipment. The design of the room was very specific as there are a certain number of students working in the classroom at one time. This needed some thought as to the health & safety implications concerning students learning and having practical lessons in cookery.

Cwmcarn Vistors Centre

Cwmcarn Visitors Centre were in need of a complete re-vamp of their reception and cafeteria area.

We decided on a bespoke curved counter and the staff chose the materials and colours to suit the décor. After a marketing survey to establish what was required from customers, we designed this counter to maximise food options and utilise the current space to form an organised queueing system. This has improved the customers experience and has provided a relaxing and pleasurable atmosphere.

Our counters are designed in-house by or CAD designer and team and all construction work is carried outat our specific workshop off site by our team of experts.

Windsor Clive Primary School

The previous kitchen set up was a stand alone twin dining room supplied by a single kitchen serving infants and juniors.

The kitchen was in a dilapidated state and was in need of a complete re-furbishment. New equipment was supplied, delivered and installed and our building team knocked walls down and build two servery suites with electric roller shutters to serve infants and juniors separately with primary colours to suit.

A complete installation of new Altro safety flooring, Altro hygienic wall cladding and a suspended ceiling took place in the kitchen and we did the same in the dining hall but painted the walls instead.
